Going Cage-Free

Improving animal welfare, one egg at a time.

At Panera®, we’re on a journey to ensure the highest possible animal welfare standards. As a part of that journey, we’ve announced our commitment to moving to using only cage-free eggs by 2020. From the in-shell eggs we crack fresh every morning for a Bacon, Egg & Cheese, to the egg whites in our Avocado, Egg White & Spinach, to the hard-boiled egg on our Chicken Cobb with Avocado, to all the eggs used in our bakery, soufflés and dressings, we’re going cage-free on a total of over 120 million eggs used every year.

As we make progress toward our cage-free goal, we’ll continue to work with with those in our communities who share the same dream for a better food future.

Our friends at Barnraiser*, are working with community farmers, innovators and educators to change the way we eat and grow good food by connecting with modern-day heroes and sharing their inspiration stories.

One such innovator is Carole Morison, a poultry farmer in Maryland who was widely followed for speaking out against industrial farming practices in the movie FOOD, INC,.

Her epiphany led her to become an independent family farmer, and she now raises nearly 500 dozen eggs per week from free-range hens, all certified with the Animal Welfare Approved label.
