Nearly 10 Million Meals Provided to Those in Need!

At Panera Bread®, we are committed to using our scale, expertise and resources to help address the issue of hunger in America. It truly warms our hearts when our customers and MyPanera® members join us in giving back to our communities and sharing our desire to help feed those in need.

One way we do that is through the Panera Bread Foundation’s Panera Cares® Community Breadbox™ program, an in-cafe change collection program where participating cafes support Feeding America®, the nation’s leading domestic hunger relief organization. We’re thrilled to report that in 2013 through our customers’ generous participation, approximately $2 million was collected! Nationally, this resulted in nearly 10 million meals* being secured for those in need. Thank you for your incredible support!

Donations made in participating bakery-cafes were split between two great programs, both of which are designed to provide high quality, nutritious food to those in need. Half of the funds were donated as cash to support 120 Feeding America member food banks across the U.S., meaning the money really does stay local! The other half of the donations are used to procure Panera’s black bean soup to be distributed to Feeding America agencies (like soup kitchens) across the country so that clients are able to eat delicious Panera soup regardless of their means.

The Foundation could not execute these programs without the compassion and support of Panera Bread’s customers, and for that we sincerely thank each and every person who has joined us in the fight against hunger. Together we are making a difference.

*50% of dollars raised through the Panera Cares® Community Breadbox™ program is converted to meals based on Feeding America®'s metric of $1 = 9 meals secured on behalf of local food banks. Remaining 50% of funds raised are helping secure an estimated 1.5 million pounds of soup for local food banks and pounds are converted to meals using USDA equivalent of 1.2 pounds per meal. Donations collected in participating bakery-cafes by the Panera Bread Foundation between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2013.
